Business Basics – Keeping your Customers Happy

Small businesses do not have many weapons in their war against huge chains and corporations that operate with budgets that are hundreds of times larger than theirs. They will never be able to offer such low prices and other perks that the biggest players can. One area where they can compete and where they need to make a difference is in customer service. Today, we will be talking about that – the ways in which small business owners can keep their customers happy.

Come Through Every Time

The most basic thing that a small business should do in order to keep their customers happy is to provide the same quality and the same level of service every time, for every customer. Your customers need to know that they will be getting exactly what they paid for and what they were expecting to get. You do not have a PR department that will get you out of trouble if one of your products turns out to be faulty or if the service is lacking.

Admit Mistakes

If you make a mistake and your customer feels the negative results of it, you simply have to admit that you made the mistake. No one likes to hear excuses when they paid for something and didn’t get expected product or service in return. When you start coming up with excuses, you come across as dishonest and less-than-solid. Some of the greatest companies in the world have publicly admitted their mistakes, apologized to their customers and made everything right. Learn from them.

Ask Questions

One of the best ways to get on your customers’ good side is to make them feel like more than just customers. The easiest way to do this is to ask them questions and listen to what they have to say. Inquire what they think about the service you provided or the product you supplied them with. See whether they have any complaints or suggestions. This will not only make them feel appreciated but might actually give you an insight into how you can improve.

Treat Every Customer the Same

Not all customers are really the same. Some of them are great customers who never bother you and who understand what it is like to run a small business. Others may be a bit more annoying in their demands and needs. This is particularly true if you work in service industry. However, no one must notice that you do not care for every customer in the same way. You need to be professional and no one should feel like they are getting shortchanged.

Reward Your Best Customers

Every business will have some great customers, people who have been with you since the beginning and who might have brought a ton of business your way themselves. These are your most valued customers and they need to stay loyal to you. There are a few ways in which you can reward them and let them know they are special. You can give them discounts, you can invite them to company events or you can even send them gift cards that they can do whatever they want with.
